When a clockmaker looks at a Swiss timepiece and then walks into a software office, he might see nothing in common. But the most creative people in history have trained themselves to see connections where others see only walls. This is the essence of analogical and metaphorical thinking: borrowing structure from one domain to illuminate a problem in another. It is a learned skill, not a mystical gift, and you can practice it deliberately to break out of mental ruts.

Consider how the inventor of Velcro, George de Mestral, took a walk in the Swiss Alps. Burrs stuck to his wool pants. Instead of brushing them off with annoyance, he asked: What is the structure of this plant’s sticking mechanism? Under a microscope, he saw tiny hooks that grabbed into loops of fabric. He then mapped that natural pattern onto synthetic materials, and a billion-dollar fastening system was born. He moved from the domain of botany to the domain of manufacturing by noticing a functional analogy: both burrs and fasteners need to attach and detach repeatedly.

This kind of leap is not random. It relies on identifying the deep relational structure of a situation. A novice might see only surface details—burrs are brown, fasteners should be black. A creative thinker looks at the underlying relationships: hooks connect to loops, tension holds them together, easy release is a design requirement. When you practice analogical thinking, you train yourself to strip away the surface and ask: What is this really doing? What core pattern is at play?

Metaphorical thinking works in a similar way but often frames an entire problem as something else. For example, a team struggling with a slow approval process might say, “This is a traffic jam.” Suddenly, the problem is not about forms and signatures but about bottlenecks, stoplights, and merging lanes. The metaphor unlocks new solutions: maybe you need a roundabout instead of a traffic light, or perhaps you should create express lanes for urgent approvals. The metaphor provides a whole system of relations that you can test against your real situation.

One powerful technique is to keep a “domain bank.” Every time you encounter a fascinating system—whether it’s a beehive, a stock exchange, a river delta, or a jazz trio—write down its key structural features. Then, when you face a creative block, pull out one of those domains and force yourself to map the problem onto it. For instance, a product designer trying to improve a kitchen tool might look at a beehive: hexagonal cells for efficient space, shared workload, a queen that coordinates. Could the tool have modular, interchangeable parts? Could users collaborate on its use? The analogies are not perfect, but they generate ideas you would never get by staring at the same old specification sheet.

Another method is to deliberately make bad metaphors first. If you try directly for the perfect analogy, your brain will censor itself. Instead, start with ridiculous comparisons. “Our hiring process is like a potato: starchy, underground, and people keep digging it up.” The absurdity forces you to explain why it’s wrong, and in that explanation you often hit on a real insight. The ineffective part of the analogy highlights what your problem genuinely lacks. This is why brainstorming sessions that allow wild metaphors often produce the most practical outcomes later.

Analogies also work backward. Instead of solving your problem, pick a random object or process and ask: How is my problem like this? A key, a tree, a rain shower, a book. Each forces a new angle. You might realize that your creative block is like a tree that needs pruning, not watering. Or that your team’s output is like a rain shower—intermittent, nourishing, but sometimes flooding. The act of articulating the comparison clarifies your own assumptions.

The risk with analogical thinking is falling in love with a single analogy. A common mistake is to treat a metaphor as truth. When someone says “the brain is a computer,” they may start expecting crash reports and backups. But the brain is also a jungle, a symphony, a chemical soup. Holding multiple analogies in tension keeps you flexible. Rotate them. Test each one. The best creative thinkers use analogies as tools, not as definitions.

You can practice this daily. Take a problem you are working on, even a small one, and find three different domains that might illuminate it. Write them down. Draw the connections. Do not worry about elegance. Over time, your mind will automatically start scanning for structural matches in everything you see. A plant’s tendril, a subway map, a recipe for bread—each becomes a potential key to unlock a stuck door.

In creative fields, the people who consistently generate novel ideas are not necessarily smarter or more talented. They have simply built a habit of borrowing from elsewhere. They see a joke and ask what it reveals about timing. They see a construction crane and wonder about leverage in negotiations. They see a child’s game and map its rules onto market strategy.
